The Bamboo Question

This is the section that matters most, and it’s where BedVoyage’s marketing deserves scrutiny.

When you see “bamboo towels” or “bamboo sheets,” you’re almost certainly looking at rayon or viscose derived from bamboo. The bamboo plant is dissolved using chemicals (primarily carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide), extruded into fibre, and woven into fabric. By the time it reaches your bathroom, there is no bamboo left in any meaningful botanical sense. The resulting textile is rayon.

The FTC has been quite clear on this. In 2022, the agency fined Walmart $3 million and Kohl’s $2.5 million for marketing rayon products as “bamboo” with unsubstantiated environmental claims. The rule is simple: if it’s been chemically processed, it must be labelled as rayon or viscose from bamboo, not just “bamboo.”

BedVoyage does comply with labelling requirements on individual product pages. You’ll see “viscose from bamboo” or “rayon from bamboo” in the technical descriptions. But the brand name, the website copy, and the overall positioning lean heavily on bamboo’s natural, eco-friendly image. 100% Bamboo Viscose line: The sheets and some towels are made from 100% viscose derived from bamboo. The queen sheet set (fitted, flat, two pillowcases) starts at approximately $149.
