Smyrna takes its name from the ancient designation for Izmir, Turkey. The city and surrounding Aegean region have produced cotton textiles for centuries. The brand makes 100% Turkish cotton towels, manufactures in Turkey, and holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification.

The name is the most interesting thing to address first, because it could be misread as a geographic claim that muddles Egyptian cotton territory. Smyrna is unambiguously Turkish: Izmir is in western Turkey, not Egypt, and the brand’s product listings reflect that.

The Izmir Cotton Connection

Izmir (historically Smyrna) sits at the center of Turkey’s Aegean cotton growing region. The area’s climate and soil support long-staple cotton varieties that have supplied Turkish weavers for generations. Major Turkish textile manufacturers source Aegean cotton from this region.

When Smyrna uses the Izmir/Smyrna name, they are referencing a real production geography, not a fabricated origin story. That is a meaningful distinction from brands that invent heritage to inflate perceived quality.

Certification and What It Confirms

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification means an independent laboratory has tested Smyrna’s finished towels for over 100 substance categories. The testing covers dyes (including azo dyes that can release harmful amines), heavy metals, formaldehyde, and pesticide residues remaining in the final fiber.

The certification confirms product safety for skin contact. It does not verify the geographic origin of the cotton fiber, which is confirmed instead by the manufacturing country (Turkey) and brand transparency about fiber type.

No Egyptian Cotton Claims

We reviewed Smyrna’s Amazon product listings and found no Egyptian cotton claims, no “Egyptian-style” language, and no inflated staple length descriptions that would imply Egyptian cotton without naming it. They sell Turkish cotton and say so.

This matters because the Amazon towel category has a significant problem with misleading Egyptian cotton claims.
