If you're looking at the Brooklinen mattress topper, I get it. It's a brand you already trust for sheets, the price is friendly, and the photos promise a cloud. But "down alternative mattress topper" and "mattress pad" are two different products, and Brooklinen's listing uses both names for the same item. Before you spend $159 on a queen, you should know which one you're actually getting.
I ordered the Brooklinen topper, slept on it, and put it next to four others: Kemet's new Cloud Mattress Topper, Onuia's Cloud Topper, Parachute's down alternative pad, and the Linenspa foam topper everyone buys on Amazon. I compared them on loft, fill, cover fabric, how well they stay on the bed, sizes, shipping, and returns.
Here's the honest breakdown of every topper I compared:

This matches my experience exactly. I bought the Brooklinen topper hoping to soften a hotel-firm mattress and it just... didn't. It's a nice mattress pad. Soft on top, washes well, the waterproof bottom saved me once. But a topper? No. Ended up putting the Kemet one over it and now the bed is actually comfortable.
That's a sensible stack, honestly. Pad underneath for protection, topper on top for loft. Just check your fitted sheet pocket depth once you add both.
The no-Twin thing is such a miss. I wanted two for a guest room with twin beds and Brooklinen just doesn't make the size. Ordered two Kemet Twins instead, $199.95 each, arrived in four days.
Mine fit fine on a 12 inch mattress but my sister has a 19 inch hybrid and the skirt wouldn't go on at all. The 18 inch limit is real. Something to check before you order.
To be fair to Brooklinen, they never claim it's a pillow top, and the 365 day return meant I got my money back with zero drama when I decided it wasn't enough. That alone puts them miles ahead of the dropship brands.
Agreed, the return was painless. It's a good product sold honestly. It's just not the product most people searching 'mattress topper' are looking for.
Does the Kemet one sleep hot? The Brooklinen was fine temperature wise and I'm nervous about going thicker.
It's fibre fill, not foam, so it breathes. Noticeably cooler than the Linenspa foam topper in this test. It is a lot more fill than the Brooklinen, though, so expect it to run a little warmer than that pad and to take longer to dry after a wash. Put a cotton sheet over it and you'll be fine.
Bought the Brooklinen on a Black Friday deal a couple of years back. Still in one piece after a lot of washes, which I can't say for cheaper pads. It did flatten a bit, but there wasn't much to flatten to begin with.
Thank you for naming the difference between a pad and a topper. Every review site lumps them together and I wasted $159 finding out the hard way.
Ordered the Kemet last night after reading this. Will report back. Fingers crossed it's as deep as the photos.
