Orange Bath Towels (2026): Burnt Orange, Terracotta and Rust, and Where to Buy Them
The Short Version
Orange is having a moment in bathrooms, but not the orange you’re picturing. The shades people are actually buying in 2026 are terracotta, rust, clay and burnt orange: the fired-earth end of the colour, not the traffic-cone end. They sit beautifully with the oak, brass, limewash and olive green that have taken over interiors.
Here’s the problem. Almost nobody good makes an orange towel. The Egyptian cotton brands don’t touch it. The luxury names don’t touch it. Orange lives on Amazon, at Target, and in a couple of mid-price brands that rotate it through seasonally. So this guide does two jobs: where to find a real terracotta or burnt orange, and what to put it against so it looks like a choice rather than an accident.

Kemet Cotton Reserve Bath Towel, Beige or Dark Brown
Kemet doesn't sell orange, and I'd rather tell you that than pretend. What it sells is the base that makes orange work: a warm beige or a chocolate brown in certified Egyptian cotton, so your terracotta hand towels look like a decision.

- 28 x 55 in bath towel; Beige and Dark Brown also on bath sheets, hand towels, washcloths and bath mat

Why Orange Is Hard to Buy (and Why That’s Fine)
Two things keep orange out of the good towel lines.
First, volume. Premium brands run palettes of six to twelve colours, and orange is near the bottom of what sells. White, grey, navy and a green cover most bathrooms. Orange covers a few, and those few often want a specific shade (rust, not tangerine), which splits the small demand even further.
Second, dye. Orange is one of the least light-fast colour families on cotton. Bright oranges go peach under hot washes and sunlight faster than a brand that sells on longevity wants to explain. The muted shades (terracotta, rust, clay) hold up much better, which is why they’re the ones the mid-price brands are willing to carry.
So the shape of the market is this: cheap bright oranges from Amazon and the big-box stores, a few rotating terracottas from the mid-price brands, and nothing in Egyptian cotton. Shop accordingly: put the money into neutral bath towels that will last, and buy the orange in the pieces you’ll replace.
The Base That Makes Orange Work: Kemet Cotton
I’ll say it plainly: Kemet Cotton doesn’t sell an orange towel, and no other Egyptian cotton brand I checked does either.
What Kemet does sell is the neutral that orange needs. The Reserve line (700 GSM, zero-twist, Cotton Egypt Association Gold Seal, woven in Egypt) lists a Beige that’s a warm oatmeal, and a Dark Brown that’s a deep chocolate, and both of them make a terracotta or rust accent look rich rather than loud. Pure White does the same job for a brighter burnt orange.
The same colours run across the Reserve bath sheet, hand towel and washcloth, the 600 GSM Signature line, and the 900 GSM bath mat ($39.95, 20 by 30 inches). That means you can build a serious, certified base in beige or brown and let the orange be a pair of $15 hand towels you swap out when they tire.
The cons. $149.95 for two bath towels is well above big-box pricing. 700 GSM dries more slowly than a lighter towel. And stock by colour rotates: when I checked in October 2026, Beige and Dark Brown were both orderable on the Reserve line, but that can change.

Best Mid-Price Terracotta: Quince
Quince sells organic Turkish cotton towels across several lines at $49.90 to $74.90 for a set of two, and its palette is the earthiest of the direct-to-consumer brands. Clay and terracotta shades turn up regularly, usually in the Classic Organic or Plush Organic lines. The colours rotate, so check what’s listed now rather than hunting for a specific name.
Turkish cotton is loopier and denser than Egyptian, and Quince doesn’t pre-wash, so expect a few washes before the towels fluff up. The terracottas I’ve seen from them are honest, dusty, fired-clay oranges rather than bright ones, which is exactly what you want.
Best Design-Led Orange: Anthropologie
Anthropologie is where the interesting oranges are: rust, terracotta, spice, often with a stripe, a stitched border or a jacquard pattern. They’re sold as individual towels at roughly $20 to $50 each depending on the line, and the colours are curated against the rest of the home range, so matching a bath mat and a shower curtain is easy.
The cotton quality varies by collection (some are standard cotton, some are Turkish), so read the fabric line before you buy. These are accent towels, not the workhorse.
Best Budget Orange: Threshold, Utopia and Amazon Basics
If you want orange today and you want it cheap, three places.
Threshold at Target rotates a burnt orange or rust through its Performance and Total Fresh lines at about $8 to $15 per bath towel, and you can see the shade in person, which with orange is worth the trip. Standard cotton, around 500 GSM.
Utopia Towels sells 4-packs of bath towels on Amazon in a bright orange at $30 to $40. Ring-spun standard cotton, lighter than it photographs, lints for a few washes. Fine for a kids’ bathroom or a pool bag.
Amazon Basics does 6-piece sets (two bath, two hand, two wash) in a similar orange at a similar price.

Best Budget Terracotta: Hammam Linen
Hammam Linen sells 4-piece Turkish cotton sets on Amazon at $35 to $45, and its orange tends to be a softer terracotta than the Utopia tangerine. Denser loops, a bit more weight, and the muted shade will outlast a bright one.
The Occasional Oranges: Pottery Barn and Brooklinen
Both brands have carried a rust or clay shade at some point, and both drop it again. Pottery Barn’s Hydrocotton is the plusher, faster-drying option when a rust is listed. Brooklinen’s Super-Plush is 820 GSM and very heavy, and has turned up in a deep rust. If either has the shade you want when you look, buy the full set at once, because it won’t be there next season.
Burnt Orange vs Terracotta vs Rust vs Clay
The names on listings are loose, so here’s the family as I read it.
Tangerine, bright orange. The saturated, no-brown orange. Fun, loud, fades fastest. The default “orange” in budget sets.
Burnt orange. Orange with brown. Warm, 1970s, the colour of a good leather chair. Needs a light bathroom.
Terracotta. Orange with pink and brown, like fired clay. Softer and dustier than burnt orange. The 2026 shade.
Rust. Darker and redder, like oxidised iron. Reads almost as a neutral from across the room. Pairs with navy and charcoal as well as with cream.
Clay, apricot, peach. The pale end. Gentle, easy, works in small bathrooms where terracotta would be too much.
The quick test: find the towel next to a white one in the listing photos. If it looks like a safety vest, it’s tangerine. If it looks like a plant pot, it’s terracotta.
What Orange Towels Pair With
I put terracotta hand towels in my cream bathroom and they looked like they’d always been there. I put the same towels in my grey bathroom and they looked like a warning sign. Base colour is everything with orange.
With cream, oatmeal or warm white: the safe pairing. Terracotta and cream is the Mediterranean bathroom in one move.
With dark brown or chocolate: burnt orange against chocolate bath towels is rich and very current. The brown bath towels guide covers the brown side.
With olive or sage: terracotta and olive is the pairing of the year. Earthy, calm, and it works with brass and oak. See the olive green guide.
With charcoal or black: the modern version. Rust hand towels against charcoal bath towels, black fixtures, white tile.
With navy: rust and navy is a classic. Burnt orange and navy is bolder but still works.
Avoid: bright orange against cool grey tile (safety vest), orange with pink unless the rest of the room is white, and orange with purple.
Do Orange Towels Fade?
Bright ones, yes, faster than almost anything. Orange dyes are sensitive to hot water, chlorine and sunlight, and a vivid tangerine washed hot and dried on a line can look peach within a year.
Muted oranges are a different story. Terracotta, rust and clay start out dusty, so a little fading just leaves them a touch lighter. This is the practical argument for the fired-earth shades over the bright ones, beyond fashion.
Cool or warm wash with like colours, no fabric softener, no chlorine, oxygen brighteners only, tumble dry on low or hang in the shade. New orange towels get their first wash alone; bright oranges are prone to a little first-wash bleed.
The fibre matters as much as the dye. Long-staple cotton keeps a smooth surface and reads deep for years. Short-staple cotton frays, scatters light, and the colour goes chalky while the dye is still there. Since most orange towels are short-staple budget cotton, expect to replace them every couple of years, and put the real money into the neutral bath towels that will outlast them.
Matching the Bath Mat
Terracotta bath mats are easier to find than terracotta towels (Target, Anthropologie and Amazon all carry them), and a clay-coloured mat under cream or brown Egyptian cotton towels is a lovely way to get the colour in without committing the whole rail to it.
The reverse also works: orange hand towels over Kemet’s bath mat in Beige or Dark Brown ($39.95, 900 GSM woven cotton, no rubber backing so it washes with the towels). The best bath mats guide has the full list.
The Bottom Line
There is no orange Egyptian cotton towel. Stop looking, and do what the interiors people do instead: a certified neutral base, orange in the accents.
For the base, Kemet’s Reserve in Beige or Dark Brown at $149.95 for two, or the Signature at $93.95. For the orange, Quince if you want a real terracotta with a return policy, Anthropologie if you want it with a pattern, Threshold or Utopia if you want it for $15.
Buy the muted shade, wash it cool, keep it out of the sun, and plan to replace the orange pieces before the neutral ones.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best orange bath towels?
For a cheap, honest orange you can buy today, Utopia Towels and Amazon Basics both list orange sets under $45, and Target's Threshold range usually has a burnt orange or rust in store. For a better terracotta or clay, Quince's Turkish cotton lines and Anthropologie are where to look, though colours rotate. No Egyptian cotton brand I checked sells orange; Kemet Cotton's Beige and Dark Brown are the usual base under orange accents.
What's the difference between burnt orange, terracotta and rust towels?
Burnt orange is orange with brown in it: warm, saturated, the 1970s shade. Terracotta is orange with pink and brown, like fired clay, softer and dustier. Rust is darker and redder, closer to oxidised iron. Clay and apricot are the pale end. Brands name them loosely, so judge the towel next to a white one in the listing photos.
Do orange towels fade?
Bright oranges fade faster than almost any other colour, because orange dyes are sensitive to hot water, chlorine and sunlight. A vivid tangerine can go peach in a year of hot washes. Muted shades like terracotta, rust and clay hold their look far longer because they start out dusty. Wash cool or warm with like colours, skip chlorine bleach, and dry on low or in the shade.
What colours go with orange bath towels?
Cream, oatmeal and warm white are the safe base. Dark brown and chocolate make burnt orange look rich. Olive and sage make terracotta look Mediterranean. Charcoal and black are the modern pairing. Navy works with rust. The combinations to avoid are orange with pink (unless you're committed to it) and bright orange with cool grey tile, which can look like a safety vest.
Are there Egyptian cotton towels in orange?
I couldn't find one. Egyptian cotton brands run small palettes and orange is a low-volume colour, so Kemet Cotton, Pure Parima, Hudson Park, Charisma and the rest skip it. The usual approach is a certified Egyptian cotton bath towel in a neutral (Kemet's Beige, Dark Brown or Pure White), with orange in the hand towels, washcloths or bath mat from a budget brand.
Is orange a good colour for bathroom towels?
In the muted shades, yes, and 2026 is the year for it: terracotta, rust and clay suit the warm, earthy bathrooms that have replaced grey spa bathrooms. Bright tangerine is harder to live with and dates fast. Keep orange to the small pieces or to one wall of a bright bathroom, and give it a cream or brown base to sit against.
What GSM should orange bath towels be?
Same as any bath towel: 600 to 700 GSM for a plush everyday towel that still dries between showers. Colour doesn't change the rule. Most orange towels on the market are budget standard cotton at 450 to 550 GSM, which is lighter than it looks in photos, so if weight matters to you, put the money into neutral bath towels and buy the orange in hand towels.
