Mellow Sleep 3/10
The Cloud Layer went up on mellowsleep.com on March 14, 2026, and on paper it's the most interesting topper under $130 I looked at. The pitch is a dual-layer, stretch-knit pad filled with "breathable 3D hollow fibers," quilted in squares, with a built-in waterproof barrier, an OEKO-TEX certificate, an 18 inch pocket for 8 to 18 inch mattresses, and a 30-day trial. Mellow says it adds "approximately 2-3 inches." At the time of writing, October 28, 2026, a Twin XL or Full is $99.99, a Queen $109.99, a King $119.99 and a Cali King $129.99, each shown against a "comparable value" that the page's own footnote describes as an estimate of what similar products sell for, not a price Mellow has charged. There's no Twin, although the page FAQ says it fits one. Stock is unpredictable: the roundup check on October 28 found every size marked sold out, and later the same day the store's product feed showed all five sizes available again.
On the bed it's a good mattress pad rather than a pillow top. The knit top is soft, the quilting keeps the fill from wandering, and the skirt grips. The loft is closer to two inches than three, and the waterproof layer under the fill does what waterproof layers do: it holds heat. The Kemet has no barrier under its fill, but it has far more fill, so I wouldn't call either of them a cool topper. What the listing never tells you is the fill weight (no GSM anywhere), the fibre itself (hollow fibre is normally polyester, but the word does not appear), the fabric of the knit, the OEKO-TEX certificate number, or where it's made. The materials section even says the knit "allows the blanket to conform to your body shape," copy that was written for another product. The store's product feed lists the queen's shipping weight at 3,039 grams, about 6.7 pounds for the whole topper, skirt and barrier included. Care is "machine wash separately in a commercial-size front-loading washer," which for most people means a trip to the laundromat.
Then there's the part that stopped me recommending it. The product page shows 4.6 stars from 1,070 reviews, and the widget's own breakdown is 828 five-star against 34 one-star, though a few of those reviews are plainly about a blanket or a pillow. Off the site the picture changes. The BBB lists Mellow Sleep in San Leandro, California with an F rating, a "Pattern of Complaints" alert, and 193 complaints in three years, 180 of them unanswered. The main Trustpilot profile for mellowsleep.com sits at 3.6 from 1,699 reviews with 31 percent one-star, and the October 2026 one-star reviews describe a comforter ordered September 16 that had not shipped after 35 days against a "3-7 business days" shipping policy, a customer who asked for a refund four times before going to her bank, and support that answers only by email with what several reviewers call AI replies. A second Trustpilot profile under mellow-sleep.com is at 1.5 stars from 71 reviews, 94 percent of them one star, including a refund that was approved and then reversed when the item shipped anyway. The returns page adds a $15 processing fee per order and deducts return shipping from the refund, and the "Lifetime Warranty" link in the footer leads to a $20 paid protection plan with its own $15 claim fee.
Who is Mellow Sleep? The legal entity on the privacy policy is MELLOW LLC. The domain was registered in November 2021, the BBB opened its file in February 2026 and lists one employee, and the site publishes an email address but no street address or phone number. It sells comforters, pillows, towels and sleepwear through Shopify and TikTok Shop, ships to the lower 48 states only through UNIUNI, USPS, Amazon Shipping, UPS and FedEx after 3 to 5 business days of processing, and does not say which warehouse the topper leaves from. Its own advertising disclosure says Mellow owns two review websites, sleepinnovationawards.com and testedbyexperts.com, that feature its products, that it pays chiropractors who endorse them, and that some testimonials came from customers who received a free product. In the Facebook Ad Library on October 28, 2026, about 16 active ads for this topper ran under seven page names: Mellow Bedding Collection, Mellow Sleep, Christina DiBella, Taylor Palmer, Heim Health, Autohub247 and Top Organize, several of them personal-name pages rather than the brand.
Not the Mellow at Walmart. Search "mellow sleep reviews" and you'll also find the Mellow memory-foam toppers sold at Walmart and Amazon, the 2, 3 and 4 inch ventilated ones with green tea or lavender infusions and a three-year warranty. Those are a Zinus Inc. brand; the MELLOW trademark for mattress toppers is registered to Zinus. They have nothing to do with mellowsleep.com, and their four-star ratings don't transfer. I couldn't find the Cloud Layer on Amazon at all, so the only place to buy it is the brand's own site.

This is the first review that matches what happened to me. I ordered the Cloud Layer and a comforter in August. The topper showed up in nine days and honestly it's fine, soft, stays put, a bit warm. The comforter never shipped. Three emails, three copies of the same paragraph about high demand. I got my money back five weeks later, and only after I opened a dispute with my card.
That split-shipment pattern is the single most common story in the BBB file, Renee. Keep the order number and the dates. For most people the card dispute is what finally moved it.
Got mine, no drama, took about a week. For $110 it's a thick waterproof mattress pad and I'm okay with that. The one thing I'd warn about is heat. The waterproof layer is right under the fill and I notice it in a Florida summer. Not a deal breaker with a cotton sheet, but it's not the "stays cool all night" from the ad either.
Mine is the reversed refund story. I cancelled the day after ordering because nothing had shipped in two weeks. They emailed that the refund was approved. Four days later the topper shipped anyway and the next email said the refund was no longer eligible and I'd have to return it through the portal, with the $15 fee and return shipping taken off. Still arguing about it.
Same $15 fee here. It's in the policy, but nobody reads the policy from a Facebook ad.
Expectation check for anyone reading: it's a pad. A nice pad. I measured about two inches at the edge before I lay on it. The video makes it look like a feather bed and it isn't that.
Thank you for the Walmart part. I bought a Mellow 3 inch memory foam topper at Walmart in July thinking it was the same brand as the TikTok ads, then read the Trustpilot reviews and panicked. Different company entirely, and the Walmart one has been fine.
Right. The Walmart and Amazon Mellow toppers are a Zinus Inc. brand; the MELLOW trademark for mattress toppers is registered to Zinus. mellowsleep.com is MELLOW LLC, a separate company. The shared name is what makes the search results so confusing.
Bought through TikTok Shop rather than the website and it arrived in six days. No complaints about the product. The knit top is nicer than the Linenspa I replaced. It does run warm.
Heads up: the "lifetime warranty" is a $20 add-on in the cart, one replacement, and you pay a $15 fee to make a claim and keep the original packaging. I only noticed because the cart total didn't match the product page.
Mellow doesn't make a Twin, which rules it out for my son's bed. Does the Kemet one come in Twin, and will it fit a 9 inch foam mattress?
Yes on both. Kemet does all six US sizes, Twin is $199.95, and the skirt is rated for 8 to 24 inch mattresses, so a 9 inch foam bed is fine.
Every size showed sold out when I looked on a Tuesday, with a pre-order banner. Back in stock the next morning. I don't know if that's real inventory or a pre-order app doing its thing, but it made me nervous about paying for something that wasn't on a shelf.
Mine was marked delivered and never arrived. Support asked for photos of the packaging and the SKU label, for a package I never got. Every reply came from the same first name with the same two sentences. I gave up and did a chargeback.
Went and read the product page after this. The materials section literally says the knit "allows the blanket to conform to your body shape." It's a topper. Someone pasted the blanket copy and never fixed it. Small thing, but it tells you how much care went into the spec sheet.
Got a Twin XL for my daughter's dorm and she loves it. My only gripe is that a $99.99 order is under the $100 free-ish shipping line, so I paid $11.99 to ship a $99.99 topper. Would've added a $5 item if I'd noticed.
Washed mine in a normal home front loader on cold. The care label says commercial size washer and I now see why: the fill shifted a bit in two of the squares. It fluffed back mostly after a shake. Just know that "machine washable" comes with a footnote.
Filed a BBB complaint on September 20 about a comforter that never shipped. Still shows unanswered. 180 of us apparently. The topper I ordered in the same cart did turn up, which is the strange part.
Is the fill polyester? I'm allergic to down and the page just says hollow fiber, which tells me nothing.
The page never says. I asked support and got a line back about "hypoallergenic 3D hollow fiber," which is a description, not a material. Hollow fibre is almost always polyester, so it's down-free either way.
Tried to ship one to family in Puerto Rico and checkout wouldn't take the address. Lower 48 only, no Hawaii, no Alaska, no military addresses. Worth knowing before you fall for the ad.
Scroll the reviews on the Cloud Layer page and one of the five stars says "this is the best blanket I ever had" and another talks about the pillow height. How does a blanket review end up under a mattress topper? Makes me trust the 4.6 a lot less.
Honest question. Kemet is $249.95 and Mellow is $109.99. If I'm willing to gamble on the shipping, is the Mellow topper actually bad, or just a worse company?
The two Trustpilot profiles thing explains a lot. I only ever saw the 3.6 one and thought the complaints were overblown. The 1.5 profile with the reversed refund stories is the one I needed to read.
Ordered the Kemet last night after reading this and the Onuia piece. Tracking already shows a label from a US warehouse. Will report back on the loft.
