The rules are different at 300 to 400 GSM than at 600+. Here’s what actually matters.

Weave type. Loop towels at 350 GSM feel thin and insubstantial. Flat-weave and waffle-weave towels are designed for this weight range and feel intentionally lightweight rather than cheap. If you want loops, go 500 GSM minimum.

Cotton quality still matters. Short-staple cotton at low GSM feels like a dish rag. Long-staple Turkish or Egyptian cotton at the same GSM feels smooth and pleasant. The fiber length determines whether “lightweight” feels good or feels cheap.
