Fall Bath Towels (2026): Autumn and Halloween Colours, Hand Towels, and the Solid Towels That Make Them Work
Why I Change the Towels, Not the Bathroom
Every September the house gets a little browner. Plaid on the sofa, a pumpkin on the porch, and in the bathroom, the plain white hand towel swaps for something with a leaf on it. It’s cheap, it takes two minutes, and the kids notice it more than any other decoration in the house (the dog notices it too, which is a separate problem).
Here’s the thing I’ve figured out after a few years of buying fall towels: the printed ones are the garnish. The towels that make a bathroom look like autumn are the solid ones in chocolate, olive, or rust that sit on the bar underneath. Get the base right and a $7 pumpkin hand towel from Target looks like you planned it.
This guide covers both. The fall and Halloween hand towels worth buying, where to find them, and the solid autumn towels that carry the look from September through the holidays.

The Fall Palette, and Which Colours to Buy as Bath Towels
Not every autumn colour belongs on a bath towel. Some are base colours you can live with all year. Some are accents that belong on a hand towel and nowhere else.
Chocolate brown. The best fall bath towel colour, full stop. Warm, hides everything, and still looks right in spring. If you buy one solid set for autumn, buy brown.
Olive green. The second base colour. Olive with brown and cream is the whole autumn palette in three towels. It also reads as a year-round neutral in a way that bright green never will. Olive green towels are harder to find in good cotton than you’d think.
Warm cream or beige. The quiet option. If brown feels heavy, a beige bath towel with a rust hand towel does the same job with more light.
Rust and terracotta. Gorgeous, and an accent. A rust bath towel is a lot of rust. A rust hand towel next to brown bath towels is perfect. The exception is a terracotta bathroom (tile or paint), where a full set works.
Mustard. Hand towel only. It’s a colour that fades toward beige-yellow after a year of washing, and that’s not a shade anyone wants to dry off with.
Burnt orange. Halloween month only, and only as a hand towel. See the orange bath towels guide if you want to go further than I would.
Plaid and buffalo check. Hand towels, usually flat-woven, usually sold as kitchen towels. They bridge Thanksgiving into Christmas nicely.
Best Fall Hand Towels
For the guest bath: embroidered harvest towels
If a guest is going to dry their hands on it, it needs to be a real towel. Embroidered designs on proper cotton terry survive washing; printed graphics don’t.
Pottery Barn’s fall embroidered hand towels (acorns, leaves, a single pumpkin) are the ones I keep going back to. The terry underneath is decent, the stitching is dense, and the designs are small enough that they don’t shout. Anthropologie’s embroidered hand towels are more pattern-heavy and a bit more fun, and a lot of them don’t read as strictly seasonal, so they stay up longer. Williams Sonoma does a harvest and Thanksgiving range that’s more traditional.
Etsy is full of embroidered pumpkin towels from small shops, and the quality varies enormously. Ask the seller what the base towel is before you buy.
For kids: printed Halloween towels
The $6 Target ghost towel is the right call for a kids’ bathroom. Target’s Hyde & EEK Boutique line and Threshold Halloween towels are the usual source, Kohl’s does Celebrate Together sets, and Walmart has multi-packs. Amazon has every motif, from tasteful black cats to a skeleton in a bathtub, and ships them in two days when you’ve forgotten and it’s October 28th.
My rule: buy two of the same design so one is on the ring while one is in the wash, and accept that they’ll last two or three Halloweens before the print cracks.

For Thanksgiving: plaid, not turkeys
A turkey towel has a two-day window. A rust or brown buffalo check hand towel works from October through December and looks like a choice rather than a theme. Most of these are flat-woven cotton (kitchen towel construction), which is fine on a ring. Look for 100% cotton and a stated size of at least 16 by 26 inches.
For a powder room you want to look expensive
Skip prints entirely. A solid rust or olive hand towel in good cotton, folded in thirds on the ring, next to a brown bath towel. That’s the whole look.
The Solid Base: Why Brown and Olive Do the Work
Here’s what I’d buy if I were building an autumn bathroom from scratch this year, and why.
Kemet Cotton makes a Dark Brown that’s an actual chocolate, not the greyish taupe a lot of brands call “brown.” It’s available across the 700 GSM Reserve line (bath towel, bath sheet, hand towel, washcloth) and the 600 GSM Signature line, and the same brown is one of the nine colours on their 900 GSM bath mat. When I checked in October 2026, Dark Brown was also one of the few Signature colours actually in stock, which tells you something about who else is buying it this time of year.
The Reserve line also lists an Olive Green and a Mint Green. Olive was sold out when I checked, so if that’s the colour you want, check the listing or sign up for the restock notice. Mint Green is a softer, lighter option that works with brown and cream if olive isn’t available. Pistachio Green is the Signature and bath mat equivalent.
The honest cons: this is $149.95 for two bath towels, which is three or four times what the Target solids cost. Colour stock rotates, it’s direct-only, there’s no monogramming, and 700 GSM takes a little longer to dry in a steamy bathroom than a lighter towel.
If you want the cotton without the price, the 600 GSM Signature bath towels are $93.95 for two.

The bath mat is the easy win
If you only change one solid thing for fall, change the mat. Kemet’s Egyptian cotton bath mat is $39.95, 20 by 30 inches, 900 GSM, and comes in Dark Brown and Pistachio Green among its nine colours. It has no rubber backing (they recommend a thin rug pad on smooth tile), which means it goes in the wash with the towels. A brown mat under white or beige towels does more for an autumn bathroom than three pumpkin towels.
How to Style Fall Towels (the Two-Tier Rule)
This is the whole method, and it’s the same one I use for Christmas towels:
Bar: solid bath towels in brown, olive, or cream. These don’t change.
Ring or hook: the seasonal hand towel. This changes three times: Halloween in October, plaid or harvest in November, wreath or snowflake in December.
Floor: a solid mat in brown or green. Changes once, in September, and stays until spring if you like it.
That’s it. The printed towel is never doing the heavy lifting, so it can be cheap and thin and that’s fine. The solid towels are doing the real work, so they’re the ones to spend on.
A couple of things that don’t work, from experience: a printed bath towel and a printed hand towel in different patterns (busy), matching the hand towel to the bath mat (looks like a set from a catalogue), and orange bath towels in any room that isn’t a Halloween party.
Washing and Storing Seasonal Towels
Printed towels: cold or warm water, no bleach, no fabric softener, low heat or hang dry. Heat is what cracks a print. Wash them before you store them, even if they look clean.
Embroidered towels: inside out in the wash so the stitching doesn’t snag. Same low heat rule.
Solid browns and olives: wash with darks, go light on the detergent (residue shows on dark towels as a chalky streak), no softener so the colour stays deep. A half cup of white vinegar in the rinse keeps them soft. How to wash towels has the full routine.
Storage: clean, bone dry, in a breathable canvas bag, not a plastic tub. A damp towel sealed up until next September is how you get the smell that won’t wash out.
What to Skip
Full Halloween bath towel sets. Thin, and you’ll be drying off with a skeleton in mid-November.
“Fall” towels with no fiber listed. If the listing is three paragraphs about the pumpkin and never mentions cotton, it’s mostly polyester. It won’t absorb and it’ll feel slick.
Mustard bath towels. They fade to a sad yellow by the second autumn.
Towels with glitter or foil print. They shed into the lint trap forever.
The Bottom Line
Buy fall and Halloween hand towels for the ring, cheaply, and change them with the month. Then put the money into solid bath towels in chocolate brown or olive that you’ll still like in March.
Kemet’s Reserve towels in Dark Brown are my base pick this year at $149.95 for two, with the $39.95 bath mat in the same brown as the easiest single change you can make. Add a $7 pumpkin towel on top and you’re done until Thanksgiving.

Frequently Asked Questions
What colour towels are good for fall?
The autumn palette that works in a bathroom is chocolate brown, rust or terracotta, olive green, mustard, and warm cream. Brown and olive are the two that look right in October and still look right in February. Rust and mustard are accent colours: buy them as hand towels, not bath towels. Plaid and buffalo check hand towels work for Thanksgiving and carry into Christmas.
When do fall towels go on sale?
Printed fall and Halloween hand towels land in stores in late August and early September, and they're marked down from the last week of October, with Halloween designs discounted first. Thanksgiving-themed towels get cheap the week after Thanksgiving. If you're buying solid autumn colours in brown or olive, they're not seasonal stock, so watch for the brand's own sales instead.
Are Halloween bath towels worth buying?
Halloween hand towels, yes, if you enjoy them. They're $5 to $15, they hang on a ring for six weeks, and kids love them. Halloween bath towels, no. Full-size printed towels are thin, they take up storage space for eleven months, and the prints crack after a season of body-drying. Put the printed ones on the ring and keep a solid bath towel on the bar.
What are fall hand towels made of?
Most printed fall and Halloween hand towels are cotton or cotton-polyester terry at roughly 350 to 450 GSM, and many listings don't state a weight at all. That's lighter than a good everyday hand towel. Embroidered towels from Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, or Anthropologie tend to use heavier cotton and last several seasons. Flat-woven plaid towels are usually kitchen towels being sold as bath decor.
Do brown bath towels show stains?
Far less than white. Dark brown hides makeup, self-tanner, coffee, and the general grey tinge white towels pick up. What it does show is lint from a white load and detergent residue if you overdose. Wash browns with other darks, use less detergent than you think, and skip fabric softener so the colour stays deep.
Can I leave fall towels up through Christmas?
Solid browns, olives, and creams, yes, they work right through the holidays and beyond. Printed pumpkin and leaf towels look odd after Thanksgiving, and Halloween towels need to come down November 1st. The easy approach is a solid fall base you leave alone and a hand towel you swap three times: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
Where can I buy fall hand towels in store?
Target, Kohl's, HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Walmart, and Hobby Lobby all stock them from late August. Pottery Barn and Anthropologie carry the nicer embroidered versions, and Williams Sonoma does harvest and Thanksgiving designs. Amazon has the widest range if you want a specific motif. Stock thins out by mid-October, so buy early if you want a particular design.
