Monarch Cypress Robe Review (2026): Is the Hotel Robe Worth It?

Quick Verdict

3.9 / 5 Legit supplier, read the label

A real hotel supplier making robes that last for years, sold with less clarity about fabric and fit than the price deserves.

What's good

  • Buyers report robes lasting 10 to 25 years
  • Both websites are the real company
  • All-cotton terry and velour styles exist

Watch for

  • The bestselling plush robe is 100% polyester
  • One size means Large, and runs big
  • Monograms can't be returned; slow email replies

If you stayed somewhere nice, loved the robe, flipped the collar over and saw “Monarch/Cypress” on the tag, you’re in good company. Two hundred of the 1,132 reviews I went through on the brand’s review page mention a hotel or spa as the reason they bought. And the robes do last. Buyers regularly describe wearing the same one for 15 or 25 years.

Here’s what the product pages don’t make obvious, though. The robe most people are looking for, the soft plush-lined one, is 100% polyester, shell and lining. It’s warm and cozy (that’s why hotels love it), but it’s a fleece blanket with sleeves, not a towel you wear. Monarch does make all-cotton terry robes, and they’re good, but you have to choose them on purpose.

Add a one-size fit that swamps anyone under about 5’7”, monograms you can’t return, and a customer service inbox that some buyers say never answers, and you get a good robe from a company that could explain itself better.

What Monarch Cypress Actually Is

Monarch/Cypress is two old hospitality textile companies under one roof. Monarch was founded in 1981 by Solomon and Berenice Chadowitz. In 2011 it bought Cypress, a hotel robe supplier Gene and Karen Faul had started in 1980, and the combined company has sold under the slash name ever since. Ashley Chadowitz runs it today, according to the company’s site and its BBB profile.

It’s based in South Plainfield, New Jersey, with a 37,000 square foot warehouse and its own embroidery department (that’s how hotels get their logos on the pockets). LinkedIn puts it at 11 to 50 employees, so this is a mid-sized family business, not a conglomerate. US import records show most of its shipments come from suppliers in Vietnam and China, and the product listings simply say “Imported.”

The company names Westin, Sheraton, Loews, Four Seasons, Omni, Ritz-Carlton, and Marriott as hotel customers, and says it’s the exclusive robe supplier to every Sheraton, Westin, and Omni in the US. I can’t verify those contracts independently, but the reviews back up the general picture: Omni hotels come up again and again (Mt. Washington, Amelia Island, Boston, Chicago, the William Penn), along with Westin, Marriott, and Four Seasons. And the Marriott Terry Velour Robe on Amazon is sold by Monarch/Cypress itself, which I cover in the Marriott terry bathrobe review.

Which Monarch Cypress Website Is Real?

Both of them, which confuses a lot of people.

✓ Official

monarchcypress.com

The wholesale site that hotels, spas, and gift shops order from. Registered in 2012, with no consumer return policy because it isn't built for you.

✓ Official

monarchcypressonline.com

The retail store where individuals buy. A Shopify shop registered in 2016; the wholesale site's "Online Retail Store" button sends you here.

⚠ Avoid

Anything else

Unrelated domains with "Monarch Cypress" robe pages are hacked websites serving fake shops to search engines.

The retail site shares the company’s New Jersey address. It isn’t a third-party reseller, even though the name makes it sound like one.

What you should be wary of is anything else. I found at least one unrelated site ranking in Google with a “Monarch Cypress Plush Lined Microfiber Bath Robe” page that has nothing to do with robes. It’s the same pattern I found on the Marriott robe: a hacked small-business website serving a fake shop page to search engines. If the domain isn’t one of the two above, Amazon’s Monarch/Cypress storefront, or a boutique you recognize, don’t put your card in.

The “Luxe” robe people search for is catalog styles 253 and 254, which are 100% combed cotton terry or velour at 425 GSM. Kids’ velour cover-ups run $45 to $52 (and note Monarch’s own listing says they’re for beach and pool use only and don’t comply with federal flammability requirements, so they aren’t pajamas).

One small thing on the price tags: several items show a “compare at” price lower than the current price (the Basic Waffle Kimono lists $39.95 crossed out next to $44.95). That usually means prices went up recently and the old number was left in the field. It isn’t a discount.

The Fabric Label Is the Whole Story

This is the section I’d want someone to read before they spend $110.

The most-rated Monarch robe on Amazon, the plush-lined 770 (3,263 ratings), has no cotton in it at all. None of the line is Egyptian, Pima, or Turkish cotton.

Microfiber and plush are polyester. The Microfiber Shawl Robe Lined in Plush, the one with 3,263 ratings on Amazon, is polyester through and through. That’s why it feels so warm and silky. It’s also why it doesn’t dry you the way cotton does. A polyester fleece lining pushes water around more than it drinks it up, which is fine if you towel off first and put the robe on for lounging, and disappointing if you expected a towel with sleeves. (It’s also why Monarch warns you to dry it at 125°F or less. Polyester fleece can literally melt.)

Chamois is microfiber too. Monarch says its chamois robes are “5x more absorbent than cotton.” I couldn’t find any test behind that number, and one reviewer described the chamois kimono as “like wearing a vinyl raincoat” before checking the tag and finding 100% polyester. Some people love chamois because it’s thin, light, and dries fast. Just go in knowing what it is.

Most waffles are blends. The Basic Waffle Kimono is 60% cotton and 40% polyester at 175 GSM, which is very light (Monarch’s own catalog notes it’s “not for industrial use”). The Diamond Waffle is 67/33. If you want waffle in pure cotton, the 100% Cotton Diamond Waffle at $64.97 is the one.

The terry and velour lines are the cotton ones. Every Monarch terry and velour robe I found is 100% combed cotton, from the 330 GSM Basic Terry Velour up to the 480 GSM 16oz Terry. Combed cotton is a good, ordinary cotton with the short fibers brushed out. It isn’t Egyptian, Pima, or Turkish, and Monarch doesn’t claim it is. Across both websites and the 2026 catalog, the words “Egyptian cotton” don’t appear once.

Three white fabric swatches side by side: fluffy polyester plush fleece, honeycomb waffle weave, and looped cotton terry
The three robe fabrics, left to right: polyester plush fleece (warm, doesn't dry you), waffle weave (light, often a blend), and loop terry (the one that absorbs).

Don’t trust the ounces. Monarch names robes by weight in ounces (“16oz Terry,” “14oz Velour”), and the numbers don’t line up with the GSM it lists. Sixteen ounces per square yard works out to about 542 GSM, but the 16oz Terry is listed at 480. If weight matters to you, go by the GSM figure. For context, 480 GSM is a solid mid-weight robe, and our towel GSM guide explains what those numbers mean in practice.

”It’s Not the Robe I Had at the Hotel”

This is the complaint that surprised me most, and it’s worth understanding before you order.

Several reviewers bought Monarch because they fell for a robe at a specific hotel, then found the retail version wasn’t the same. One guest who loved the robes at the Omni Mt. Washington said the one she received “lacks the thick soft plush lining” of the hotel’s. Another, remembering the Omni in San Antonio, said the shell matched but “the terry lining is not the same weight or texture” and seemed synthetic. That fits the specs: the retail terry-lined robe’s lining is 80% cotton and 20% polyester, and a hotel can order a different spec than what’s on the website.

Hand holding a smartphone to photograph the care label inside the collar of a white hotel bathrobe
Before you check out, photograph the tag inside the collar. The style number and fiber line are what you need to find the same robe.

Hotels buy to their own specification, and the same style name can come in different fabric weights, linings, and cuts. So if you want the exact robe:

  1. Photograph the tag while you’re there, including any style number (770, 777, 408 and so on) and the fiber content.
  2. Ask the front desk or spa which robe it is. Several reviewers say the hotel pointed them to Monarch directly.
  3. Email Monarch with the style number and hotel name before ordering, and ask whether the retail version matches.
  4. Look at the Specials section. Monarch sells hotel overruns with logos from about $35 to $50. You won’t get to choose the hotel, but it’s the closest thing to the real in-room robe.

Sizing: One Size Means Large

Monarch’s “one size fits most” (OSFM) is a Large. The company’s size chart puts it at roughly a 60-inch waist (65 for XL), a 57-inch bust, and 48 to 52 inches long. The store’s own product information page says “some customers complain that our items are too large,” which is refreshingly honest and also true: at least two dozen of the reviews I read say the robe was too big, and a 5’5” reviewer said she “drowns in it” and had to have the sleeves taken in.

LargeWhat "one size fits most" means
60 inWaist (65 in for XL)
57 inBust
48 to 52 inLength, depending on style

Here’s how I’d handle it:

  • If you’re petite or under about 5’7”, choose a sized style. The plush-lined 770 runs XS to 2XL, and the 16oz Terry comes in M, L, and XL.
  • If you’re buying a gift, the one-size terry and velour robes are the safest bet for tall recipients and a gamble for anyone small.
  • Don’t monogram until you know the fit. Personalized items can’t be returned, and monogram mistakes are one of the most common themes in Monarch’s negative reviews. Order plain first if you can.

What 1,132 Reviews Say

I pulled every review on Monarch’s reviews.io page (1,132 of the 1,152 listed, going back to 2015) and read the lows as carefully as the highs.

What people love. Longevity, first and foremost. “I’ve had 2 of these exact robes for 15+ years and I’ve literally worn them threadbare.” “Replaces a spa robe I’d had for 25 years.” Dozens of reviews talk about how many years their robe has lasted. The second theme is gifting, and the third is simply the hotel memory: people finding the tag, looking up the company, and buying the robe they remember.

What people complain about. In rough order of how often it comes up:

  • Size. Too big, especially one-size styles.
  • Monograms. Wrong initials, messy stitching, and no way to return it.
  • Unanswered emails. Buyers trying to return or exchange who say they heard nothing back for days. Monarch doesn’t take phone orders, which doesn’t help.
  • Shipping time. Embroidered orders add 7 to 14 business days, and some plain orders are slow too.
  • Fabric expectations. Thinner than hoped, or “not like the resort robe,” as above.
  • Overrun substitutions. One March 2026 buyer called it “classic bait and switch” when their overrun sold out after purchase and a different robe was offered.

None of that sinks the brand for me. It does mean you should order with enough time, keep your receipt, and not monogram a first purchase.

About That “Favorite Spa Robe” Award

Monarch’s store says it was chosen “Favorite Spa Robe Manufacturer 3 years in a row by American Spa Magazine.” I looked it up.

Claim check

Claimed: winner, three years in a row. On record for 2020 through 2024: a finalist each year, with the award going to other brands (Mansfield, Sposh, and Boca Terry among them).

Monarch may have won in earlier years that I couldn’t find records for, but the recent record says finalist, not winner. Being a five-time finalist is a perfectly good sign of an established spa supplier. I’d just rather the badge said what actually happened.

Is There a Monarch Cypress Discount Code?

Not a real public one, as of September 2026. The newsletter promises product updates, not a sign-up discount, and the codes floating around coupon sites didn’t check out. Here’s what actually saves money:

  • Specials section. Overruns and seconds at 10% to over 60% off, including hotel-logo robes from about $35.
  • Boutiques. Spa shops that stock Monarch often charge less than the official store. The plush-lined robe was $92 at Harborside Bath & Body and $95 at The Soap Opera Company, versus $109.95 direct.
  • Amazon. The plush robe was $103.99 on Monarch’s own Amazon storefront, about $6 under the direct price, with Amazon’s return process.
  • Free extras. Ground shipping to the lower 48 is free, and so are gift bags.

If you return something to the official store, it has to be unused and unwashed within 30 days, and Monarch deducts $9.99 for return shipping. Personalized items are final sale.

Is This What Oprah Wears?

Google suggests this question for Monarch searches, so here’s the answer: no evidence of it. The robes that have made Oprah’s Favorite Things include the Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Ribbed Hooded Robe (2021) and a Brooklinen Super-Plush Turkish cotton robe (2025). Monarch has had a moment on TikTok instead, where one creator told viewers the spa robes at some luxury hotels come from Monarch/Cypress and cost about $100 without the logo versus $275 with it.

How to Care for a Monarch Cypress Robe

Monarch’s instructions are specific, and they matter more for the polyester robes than the cotton ones:

  • Plush-lined and microfiber robes: dry at 125°F or below, which is Monarch’s own limit for the plush lining. High heat flattens (and can melt) the fleece, and fabric softener coats microfiber, so skip it.
  • Chamois: wash at 110 to 130°F, no softener, and keep the dryer under 160°F.
  • Cotton terry and velour: these are the forgiving ones. Warm wash, tumble dry, and skip softener so the loops keep absorbing.

For any robe, wash it a couple of times before judging the softness. New terry often feels a little stiff until the sizing washes out.

Monarch Cypress vs an Egyptian Cotton Robe

If you’ve read this far and realized you actually want the thing you thought you were getting (a soft, all-cotton robe that dries you off), here’s how Monarch’s two most popular options compare with the Egyptian cotton robe I recommend most often.

Kemet Cotton makes its Ultra Soft Bath Robe from 100% Egyptian cotton at 500 GSM, in the same zero-twist construction as its towels (zero-twist yarn lofts up plush rather than packing tight, so it feels soft from the first wear). It’s cut with a hood in the product photos, two front pockets and a tie belt, comes in two real sizes and six colors, and Kemet’s product page lists a Cotton Egypt Association Gold Seal license (No. 1624) for the cotton. One sizing note, since it’s the opposite of Monarch: Kemet says its robe runs slightly small and suggests ordering one size up if you want it roomy. At $129.95 it’s $20 more than Monarch’s plush robe, with free shipping and free 30-day returns on unused robes.

The honest trade-off: if what you loved at the hotel was the fleecy, blanket-like warmth, the Monarch plush robe will give you more of that than any cotton robe will. If what you loved was stepping out of the shower into something that actually dries you, cotton is the answer, and Egyptian cotton is the softest version of it.

Who Should Buy Monarch Cypress (and Who Shouldn’t)

Buy it if you want the exact spa-robe warmth you remember and you’re fine with polyester, you want a robe that will genuinely last a decade, or you need logo embroidery for a business, a wedding party, or a gift.

Pick the cotton styles if you want a robe that dries you off. The 16oz Terry and the velour shawls are the ones.

Skip it if you’re petite and only the one-size styles appeal to you, you’re on a deadline (embroidery plus shipping can take three weeks), or you want a named-origin cotton. Nothing Monarch sells is Egyptian, Pima, or Supima.

The Bottom Line

Monarch/Cypress is the real deal as a hospitality supplier: a New Jersey family business, 45 years in, whose robes hang in hotel closets across the country and last for years at home. Both of its websites are official, and its reviews are strong where it counts.

But “the hotel robe” is not one product. The bestseller is 100% polyester, the cotton robes are ordinary combed cotton, the one-size fit is a Large, and the retail version may not match the one you wore on vacation. Read the fabric line, check the size chart, skip the monogram on your first order, and you’ll probably be very happy. If you want the same comfort in a robe that’s cotton through and through, the Kemet Ultra Soft Bath Robe is where I’d look next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy Monarch Cypress robes?

Directly from the company at monarchcypressonline.com, which is Monarch's own retail store (monarchcypress.com is the wholesale site, and it links there for personal orders). Monarch/Cypress also sells through its own Amazon storefront, shipped by Amazon, and through spa boutiques like The Soap Opera Company and Harborside Bath & Body. The boutiques were a few dollars cheaper than the official store on the plush-lined robe when we checked in September 2026 ($92 to $95 versus $109.95).

Are Monarch Cypress robes good?

The construction is, and the longevity is the strongest thing in their reviews: dozens of buyers describe robes lasting 10, 15, even 25 years. The catch is fabric. The famous plush-lined robe is 100% polyester inside and out, and many of the waffle robes are cotton-polyester blends. If you want an all-cotton robe, Monarch makes several (the terry and velour lines are 100% combed cotton), but you have to pick them deliberately.

Is monarchcypressonline.com legit?

Yes. It's the company's official direct-to-consumer store, a Shopify shop run by Monarch Towel Company in South Plainfield, New Jersey. The wholesale site at monarchcypress.com sends personal buyers there, the two list the same New Jersey address, and the retail site sends wholesale buyers back. The domain has been registered since 2016.

What material are Monarch Cypress robes?

It depends entirely on the style. The Microfiber Shawl Robe Lined in Plush (style 770) is 100% polyester shell and lining. The terry-lined microfiber (777) has a polyester shell and an 80% cotton, 20% polyester lining. The chamois robes are 100% microfiber. Waffle robes range from 60/40 and 67/33 cotton-poly blends to one 100% cotton diamond waffle. The terry and velour robes are 100% combed cotton. None of the line is Egyptian cotton.

Do Monarch Cypress robes run large?

Yes, noticeably. Monarch's one-size-fits-most (OSFM) equals a Large, with a waist around 60 inches and a length of 48 to 52 inches, and the store's own product page admits some customers find its items too large. If you're under about 5'7", pick a style that comes in real sizes (the plush-lined 770 comes in XS to 2XL), and never monogram until you're sure of the fit, because personalized items can't be returned.

Which hotels use Monarch Cypress robes?

Monarch says it supplies Westin, Sheraton, Loews, Four Seasons, Omni, Ritz-Carlton, and Marriott, and claims to be the exclusive robe supplier to every Sheraton, Westin, and Omni in the United States. Those are the company's claims, not independently verified. Buyer reviews name Omni properties most often, and the Marriott Terry Velour Robe sold on Amazon is listed by Monarch/Cypress as the seller.

Is there a Monarch Cypress discount code?

Not an official public one that we could find in September 2026. The newsletter doesn't advertise a sign-up discount. What Monarch does offer is free ground shipping to the contiguous US, free gift bags, and a Specials section of hotel overruns and seconds priced 10% to over 60% off, including logo robes from $35. Coupon-site codes for Monarch are unverified.

What is Oprah's favorite robe?

Not a Monarch Cypress robe, as far as we can find. Oprah's Favorite Things lists have featured the Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Ribbed Hooded Robe (2021) and a Brooklinen Super-Plush Turkish cotton robe (2025). We found no evidence that Monarch/Cypress has ever appeared on the list.

How do you wash a Monarch Cypress plush robe?

Gently, and with a low dryer. Monarch's own instructions say to dry the plush-lined robes at 125°F or less to prevent the polyester fleece from melting. For chamois robes, wash at 110 to 130°F with no fabric softener or dryer sheets, and keep the dryer under 160°F. High heat is what flattens the plush and makes microfiber feel stiff.
